UFCU Launches Second “House That Credit Unions Built”

Austin, TEXAS, September 17, 2021 — UFCU, Austin’s largest locally owned financial institution, is literally building on its core beliefs of cooperation and community empowerment once again. Construction kicked off last week for the second “House that Credit Unions Built,” a project organized by the Austin Chapter of Credit Unions with six area credit unions partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build an affordable home. UFCU is this year’s lead sponsor.

“Providing families with a safe, affordable place to live is more important now than ever,” said UFCU CEO Tony Budet. “We’re proud to join our neighboring credit unions to bring to life our values of people helping people. That’s the foundation upon which all credit unions are built. It’s a privilege to work again with Habitat for Humanity, whose mission of bringing ‘people together to build homes, communities and hope’ aligns with our commitment to strengthening the financial health of individuals and our communities.”

More than 300 employees from UFCU, A+ Federal Credit Union, Austin TELCO Federal Credit Union, Greater Texas Credit Union, Velocity Credit Union, and credit-union members of the Austin Chapter will be pounding nails, sawing boards, raising walls, and doing all manner of hands-on construction work to build a home alongside the future homeowner and Habitat for Humanity construction experts. Credit union employees will be working on the build site weekly from mid-September to mid-December this year.

“I’m excited to help build a home again this year,” said UFCU employee Ricky Vega. “It’s an amazing experience to be a part of making a homeowner’s dream come true. To work alongside other credit union employees is a bonus!”

Not only does this build foster collaboration and help a Central Texas family realize their dream of owning a home, the project also highlights the importance of available, affordable housing for everyone. “We are excited to partner again with this coalition of credit unions for the second House that Credit Unions Built. Credit unions really understand how much an affordable home means to a family,” said Austin Habitat for Humanity CEO Phyllis Snodgrass.
